Enormous rare sea creature hauled from depths by Florida shark fisherman

Enormous rare sea creature hauled from depths by Florida shark fisherman

Mark "the Shark" Quartiano has caught thousands of sharks, but never anything like the 800-pound deep-water stingray he landed off Miami Beach

Mark Quartiano has caught thousands of sharks, and hooked clients up with thousands more. In fact, the Florida captain is famously known as Mark the Shark.
But until Saturday, Mark the Shark had not encountered anything quite like the monstrous skate that he described as looking “like some kind of dinosaur.”
It was a rare catch for an angler, indeed. Quartiano said this shark relative’s scientific name is Dactylobatus clarkii, and a quick Internet search revealed very little information about the species. However, on Monday, George H. Burgess of the Florida Museum of Natural History identified the creature as a roughtail stingray with the scientific name, Dasyatis centroura.
It resides in deeper continental shelf waters of the U.S. East Coast from off the Carolinas south to Uruguay, and in the eastern Atlantic.
“Most anglers don’t bottom-fish in these deeper waters so they aren’t routinely seen by that user group, but commercial longline fishers and research biologists see the critter fairly commonly,” Burgess said. “Obviously large adults like this require heavy fishing gear and strong backs–they aren’t great fighters, but they weight a bunch and are prone to suck their body onto the bottom like a kiddie arrow tip. Once the suction is broken it’s basically a matter of hoisting up a big weight.”
Quartiano, who was fishing with a Japanese film crew, had dropped a whole bonito to the bottom off Miami Beach. Before long, line began to spin from his reel.
“I was fishing at about 500 feet and we were trying to catch a shark for their TV show,” the captain said. “I hooked that monster and it took about four hours to bring it up. At first I thought it was a large thresher shark, because that’s kind of the way they fight.”
One of the film crew had underwater gear and captured footage that will be released later this year or early next year, Quartiano said.
Quartiano’s crew winched the giant creature out of the water for “three or four minutes” for a photo opportunity, then set it free. Mark the Shark estimated its weight at 800 pounds.

Thierry Henry hang his boot, return to London as a media pundit

Thierry Henry hang his boot, return to London as a media pundit

Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has confirmed his retirement from football and will return to London to take up a role as a media pundit.
However, the former France international and World Cup winner has instead called time on a trophy-laden career, which included spells with Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and the Red Bulls.
Henry confirmed the news in a statement on his Facebook page on Tuesday morning:
Henry will always be most closely associated with Arsenal, where he is the leading goal scorer with 228 goals in 377 games across two different spells.
Arsene Wenger, who had known him as a young player at Monaco, signed him from Juventus for 11 million pounds in 1999, and immediately shifted him from the wing to a central striking position.
His blend of pace and power made him one of the most feared forwards in English football, and Henry won the Premier League title twice with the Gunners -- including the 2003-04 season, when the side went through their entire league campaign unbeaten -- as well as the FA Cup three times. Henry left Arsenal in 2007 and joined Barcelona, where he won the Champions League in 2009.
He also added two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to his honours list in three seasons at Barcelona.
His medal collection also includes a Ligue 1 title and Trophee des Champions with Monaco, his first professional club. He spent the final five years of his playing career with the Red Bulls, returning to Arsenal to make four appearances on loan in early 2012.
With France, Henry scored 51 goals in 123 appearances -- only Lilian Thuram has more caps with Les Bleus.
He was a member of the 1998 World Cup winning squad, while also being a runner up in 2006. Henry was a European champion in 2000 and was part of the team that won the Confederations Cup in 2003.

Mario Balotelli gets one-match ban for offensive Instagram post

Mario Balotelli gets one-match ban for offensive Instagram post

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has been banned for one match and fined 25,000 pounds ($39,000) after admitting sending an offensive message on social media, the Football Association has confirmed.
Balotelli had shared an image on Instagram featuring the Nintendo character Mario that included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew."
The Italy international later deleted the post, describing it as an "unlucky moment," and added in follow-up posts on Twitter that his own adopted mother is Jewish.
However, he was charged by the FA and suspended for one match.
An FA statement read: "Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today [Thursday Dec. 18, 2014], Mario Balotelli has been fined 25,000 pounds, suspended for one match with immediate effect, subject to any appeal, and warned as to his future conduct after he admitted breaching FA Rules in relation to social media.
"The charge was that an image the Liverpool player posted on social media was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper, contrary to FA Rule E3(1). Furthermore, the posting was considered to be an 'Aggravated Breach' as defined in FA Rule E3(2) in that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief.
"Mr Balotelli has also been ordered to attend an education programme."
Balotelli confirmed soon after the ruling that he would not appeal, writing on Twitter: "Following the recent events related to my 'Super Mario' post, the FA decision has made clear that it was wrong. I am sorry that my teammates and supporters of Liverpool FC have to be penalized for something that I did and now come to regret.

FG requires $113bn to grow power sector, others

The Federal Government needs about $113 billion for the development of three critical sectors of the economy.
The amount is to be deployed in the oil and gas, power and transport sectors of the economy over a period of six years.
Director General of Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Benjamin Dikki revealed this in a paper presented at the Annual General Meeting of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) entitled, “Making Nigeria Work: A Dialogue Between the Real Sector and the Reformer.”
Disclosed that to modernise the Nigerian transport system, investments of  about $33 billion would be required in six years for road and rail development to undertake rehabilitation and modernisation of the Nigerian Railway and the construction of new road networks across the country.
He explained that in the next six years, Nigeria would require about $18 – $20 billion of investment in the power sector, adding that the current reforms in the sector has enabled the private sector to invest  in the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and in new projects.
Dikki noted that within the same period, the nation would require about $60 billion investments in oil and gas to unleash the potentials in the sector.
He said government was not in a position to finance all the investment requirements, thus  the private sector needs to participate in investing in the various sectors  of oil and gas, roads, railways, inland waterways and other sectors.
“It is in order to attract these needed private sector investments that government, through the transformation agenda, is finetuning policies,  legal and regulatory frameworks to give confidence to the private sector to invest,” he said.
He emphasised that the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and transport bills midwifed by BPE would be critical. He added that without the passage of the bills, the country is estimated to be losing, for example, an additional revenue of about $287 million in accruals to government from the three production sharing contracts every month if the PIB is not passed.
On the impact of reform and privatisation on the nation’s economy, the Director General said the BPE has concluded reforms in eight sectors of the economy namely telecommunications, power, banking and finance, marine, mining, industrial, steel, oil and gas, government has also, so far, privatised 123 enterprises including the recently concluded Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) successor companies and realised over N564.3 billion.
Dikki further noted that the reform of the telecommunications and banking sectors remain so far the most successful in terms of their impact on the Nigerian economy, stressing that the nation’s tele-density has been raised from about 450,000 telephone lines in 2001 to over 134.5 million as at September 2014.
